You can clad the aluminum construction of the balcony raised bed with a variety of materials. For example, materials such as multiplex panels, wood-based materials with weather-resistant properties, WPC decking, HPL or multi-purpose panels, modern steel panels with patina, plastic panels or aluminum corrugated sheets are suitable here. However, when using wood-based materials, you should make sure to treat them with weather protection paints or glazes for outdoor use.

For attaching the cladding, you can use our practical angle connector for furniture construction made of plastic (Item No.: 262.55.550) in conjunction with self-tapping 3.5x13mm self-drilling screws (Item No.: AS02113513).

A raised bed on the balcony usually differs from the typical raised bed in the garden, as it is smaller in most cases and has a low weight. Our system is suitable for building raised beds, but also for building your own cold frame.

Frequently Asked Questions DIY Raised Beds

1. When should I create my raised bed? The ideal time to create the raised bed is spring. Because then you can plant the raised bed directly after layering. In autumn, a lot of usable material accumulates from shrub and lawn cutting measures, which you can use to fill the raised bed.

Throughout the year, you can also refill the raised bed as needed, if biodegradable material is available.

2. Which plants are suitable for the raised bed? Basically, you can use flowers and flowering plants, herbs, but also vegetables and fruit bushes for cultivation in a raised bed. When selecting plants, it is best to pay attention to the climatic conditions in your region. Furthermore, when choosing plants, you should ensure that the root length does not reach the bottom of the raised bed.

3. How important is layering in a raised bed? In a raised bed, various organic materials are layered on top of each other. This, on the one hand, ensures water balance regulation, and the plants benefit from the nutrients of the decomposable organic waste. The increase in temperature in the soil area resulting from the decomposition processes occurs exclusively in the first few weeks. Therefore, conventional layering can be omitted later on.

Layering the Raised Bed Correctly

Layering a raised bed. Here's how!
Layering a raised bed. Here's how!
A raised bed consists of various layers of rich organic materials that are layered on top of each other. For growing vegetables, four to five layers should be planned. For a raised bed primarily used for herbs and/or ornamental plants, three different soil layers are sufficient.

  1. Shrub branches for good ventilation and to prevent waterlogging
  2. Green waste, so that the soil does not penetrate the drainage layer
  3. Rotten manure or coarse compost
  4. Soil/planting substrate as the top layer serves for planting

If you can manage it in terms of time, it is advantageous to create your raised bed in autumn. Because at the end of summer or when autumn begins, a lot of plant remains, branch cuttings, and shrub cuttings usually accumulate in the garden. You can use these natural materials immediately for layering the raised bed. In addition, the layers of a freshly created raised bed settle considerably in the first weeks and months. So if you fill it in autumn, you only have to refill soil at the top in spring.
Heat is generated through the process of decomposition of branches, shrubs, leaves, or compost waste. At the same time, these layers provide the plants with a particularly large amount of nutrients. This is also one of the reasons why you can harvest about three times as much from a raised bed as from a normal garden bed. Plant and garden experts agree on this. However, the high nutrient density also makes it possible for plants to be planted significantly closer together than in a conventional bed.
