In the first step, the front side of the construction is assembled, starting with the lower front side. The PVC-U profiles are inserted twice between the webs of the aluminum profiles and additionally glued. The outer U-profile is inserted in such a way that the pane can be inserted, but the inner U-profile is inserted in the opposite direction.

After the lower front panel for the hamster enclosure has been connected, the upper front panel with the glass sliding doors follows. Here too, the PVC-U profiles must be glued in, but in such a way that one sliding door can be inserted into each of the PVC-U profiles. This allows the sliding doors to be moved as desired at the end.

Needs of a Hamster

To build the perfect hamster cage yourself, it is important to know a hamster's needs so you can optimally adapt the habitat when building the cage.

Here you can learn more about keeping hamsters.
The ideal habitat.
The ideal habitat.
Area Calculation
If the habitat is not adapted accordingly, the rodents can suffer damage and illnesses.
Hamsters have an extremely pronounced flight instinct, as they are prey animals in the wild. Hamsters are therefore rather shy animals and dig tunnels and caves for protection - in the hamster cage, of course, into the small animal bedding. They use these as a refuge and sleeping place.
Hamsters are solitary animals
Tip:Hamsters are also solitary animals. They only live with a partner or in a group (offspring) during mating season. Group or pair housing of hamsters can even become dangerous for them, as they can attack and injure each other.
The ideal habitat
Hamsters are very active animals when they are not sleeping. Hamsters are rather nocturnal, so they usually sleep during the day. However, when hamsters are awake, their high activity is expressed through their constant urge to move, e.g., by running, climbing, and playing. Just like you know it from the hamster wheel.
The rodent's teeth are optimized for gnawing and continue to grow steadily, so they must be worn down accordingly, otherwise they will become too long and can lead to injuries in the hamster's mouth area. Hamsters particularly like to gnaw on wood, so care must be taken that if this happens, the wood has not been treated with chemicals. The chemicals could lead to health problems for the hamster.

How much area is needed?

The space in the cage is particularly important, because a small hamster already needs at least 0.5 square meters of space. Larger hamster breeds, however, can also require up to 2 square meters of space per hamster.

Should you decide to keep multiple hamsters, the space requirement per hamster increases.
In this case, the hamsters must absolutely have enough space to be able to get out of each other's way. Hardly any hamster is suitable for group housing.

However, if you have planned enough space for your hamster, this is not all.
You must offer the hamster various hiding places and provide deep trays of at least 10 cm for the bedding so that the hamster can dig sufficiently.

Tip: Once everything has been taken into account, there must still be enough space for some climbing opportunities such as bridges, tubes, etc.

FAQ: Build your own hamster cage

ALUSTECK® offers a sturdy and modular aluminium construction that is durable and easy to clean. Thanks to the flexible plug-in system, you can adapt the cage individually and extend it at any time.

Yes, with ALUSTECK® you can plan the size, shape and fittings exactly according to your needs. This way you can easily integrate levels, tubes or additional climbing elements.

Glass, Plexiglas or close-meshed wire mesh are ideal for creating a safe environment. Wooden walls should be protected with a non-toxic coating so that they do not become soaked with urine.

Ventilation grilles or open wire areas on several sides ensure good air circulation. A sufficient supply of fresh air is especially important to prevent the build-up of moisture and unpleasant odours.

Yes, several levels give the hamster more opportunities to move and create an exciting environment. It is important that the levels are non-slip and safely accessible.

A mixture of hemp bedding, wood shavings and hay is ideal, as it is diggable and low in dust. A deep layer of bedding allows the hamster to act out natural behaviours such as digging.

Yes, the modular system from ALUSTECK® allows the cage to be extended easily. This way you can add further areas or climbing structures later on.
