Building Instructions: Build Your Own DIY Chicken Run
In this guide to building your own chicken run, you will learn how to proceed with the planning and construction of a suitable outdoor enclosure. The construction is built very simply using plug-in connections. Afterwards, only the aviary wire is mounted by simply attaching it.
When building and planning a chicken run, you have to consider several things. Aspects such as the mesh size of the aviary wire are just some of the points you should consider when building it yourself. The system is also a good alternative to an Omlet chicken run or chicken coop.
Step by step to a successful project
With the knowledge of which criteria you must consider when building an enclosure for chickens, you can now follow the instructions to plan and build your chicken enclosure. Keep pen and paper ready to sketch your construction and get an overview of what your enclosure should look like.
Subsequently, use this sketch to determine which materials and dimensions you need for the construction of your individual enclosure.

Step 1: Define area
Once you have determined the required or even additionally desired area, you can now begin planning your individual construction.
Step 2: Determine Construction, Shape and Grid
You can now define a construction grid with the desired height and width using the aluminum plug-in system. Please note the width of the aviary wire for later attachment points and whether an access door is necessary. Now you create the bill of materials with the selection of the required connectors, aluminum profiles, and other accessories.
Tip: With our flange connector, any struts and supports can easily be integrated into the construction!

Step 4: Create Bill of Materials for ALUSTECK® Material, Aluminum Profiles and Lengths
For the construction, we recommend the following aluminum profiles from our online shop:
- Aluminum profile without web 25 x 25 mm square tube
- Aluminum profile 1 web 20 mm flush 25 x 25 mm square tube

Step 5: Create Bill of Materials for Aviary Wire and External Accessories
Once you have assembled your construction, you only need to fix the aviary wire to the frame of the chicken aviary. There are various simple solutions available commercially for this. The most cost-effective option is fastening with UV-resistant cable ties or stainless steel cable ties.
The professional attaches the aviary wire with ALUSTECK® accessories, self-tapping screws and/or clamping fixings, for example with an ALUSTECK® flat bar.
How much space do your chickens need?
Before you start building the chicken coop, you should be aware of how many chickens you want to keep or, if applicable, already keep.
The enclosure size is calculated based on the number of chickens. This is then the minimum floor area that the chicken run should offer.
The Calculation Formula for the Area
When building your own chicken run, please make sure to provide each chicken with at least four square meters of space. The run should be at least 80 cm high. If you have enough space, grant the chickens maximum free range, for the well-being of the animal and for any future expansion of the flock. It is also very pleasant when constructing your own chicken aviary to consider your personal standing height. The advantage is the free and upright movement during any work in the chicken enclosure.
Protection of chickens from natural enemies
If you have decided to build the chicken enclosure yourself, you should definitely pay attention to protecting the chickens from their natural enemies. To ensure the safety of the chickens, secure the entire enclosure with suitable aviary wire, including the roof. When choosing the aviary wire, you should consider the required width and the mesh size.
Tip: The chickens enjoy a large scratching area, green space, and small bushes.
Things worth knowing about chicken keeping
Pay attention to the optimal area in relation to the number of chickens. You should also ensure sufficient protection against natural predators such as foxes, martens, and birds of prey.

The chicken coop should be bright and dry. There should also be good ventilation and no drafts.
Tip: Number of chickens
At least three chickens are required for keeping. However, as a private individual, you may only keep a maximum of 20 chickens.
Tip: The Rooster
A rooster is not absolutely necessary for keeping chickens, because chickens lay eggs even without a rooster.

Chickens must be fed daily, the feeders and waterers cleaned every 2 to 3 days.
