8 Steps to a successful Camper Conversion Project
Converting a van or camper is like an adventure and offers the promise of freedom and independence. But the decision and planning require many considerations and decisions that need to be made. To make it easier for you to get started and to avoid mistakes, we will show you step by step what matters and what needs to be considered. It doesn't matter whether you are a professional craftsman or not.
It applies: Every camper conversion is subject to various requirements, to which the plans must be adapted. This is due, among other things, to the different vehicle models that serve as a basis, but also to your individual wishes for the camper conversion. You must decide what your requirements are and how they can best be implemented.
In the course of the camper conversion, we want to support you as best as possible with these tips!
First Step: Selecting the Right Vehicle
The first step is choosing the vehicle. There are many vehicles that come into question. All have their advantages and disadvantages and differ in price and available space. The decision will not be an easy task, as you should be aware of the requirements and demands you have for your converted camper even before selecting the vehicle. If you choose the wrong vehicle and the planning turns out to be flawed, you will probably quickly lose the joy of converting your camper.
Before starting your camper conversion, you should ask yourself three important questions:
- How big must/may/should the van you want to convert be?
- How much storage space will be needed for your travels in the converted camper?
- What luxury/amenities do you want to allow yourself?
The main point here is to become aware of everything you want to accommodate in your camper and how much space it takes up. Based on this, you can roughly calculate how much space remains for further wishes or what possibilities there are for realization. Depending on the vehicle chosen, the space can be significantly larger and more flexible, but the costs can also increase, not only in the purchase price but also on later trips.
Apart from that, there are also some legal regulations to observe, for example, the permissible total weight of the vehicle. This also determines the selection of materials to a certain extent, as they have a significant impact on the vehicle's weight. A conversion with ALUSTECK® offers many possibilities, as aluminum has a low material weight and can be ordered precisely to adapt the construction exactly to the respective vehicle.
When selecting the vehicle, attention should also be paid to its shape. The different vehicles have different interior shapes; for example, there are vehicles where the interior walls narrow towards the top, which results in significantly less available space and complicates planning. With vertical walls, planning is much easier, and no complicated constructions for cabinets, interior cladding, and other furniture need to be built.
Another important question that arises is which parts of the world you want to travel to, as not every vehicle is suitable for all conditions. For example, larger vehicles have problems with narrow mountain roads in France or Italy.

Second Step: Vehicle Cleaning and Interior Disassembly
In the second step, depending on the condition of the vehicle at the time of purchase, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the vehicle, especially the loading area, before starting and, if necessary, to remove rust. For this, you must remove everything in the camper, i.e., all paneling, the floor panel, and the seats, if necessary. Then you should clean the entire camper with a sponge and water.
Before the fit-out begins, the planning must of course be complete, and you should be aware that the limited space needs optimal planning to save as much of it as possible. Bear in mind that all the modules are to some extent interdependent and influence one another, so this affects the overall plan.
It's important to plan the additional windows, thermal and sound insulation, wall and ceiling cladding, electrical appliances and their consumption, power sources, the flooring and the furniture — for which, as already mentioned, the ALUSTECK® system is ideal thanks to its low weight and high flexibility, for building the kitchen and, if needed, bathroom, cupboards, storage spaces and bed.
Third Step: Plan and Install Windows
In the third step, you should install the planned windows of your camper, if you need them. This is especially necessary for a camper with closed cargo areas, as the living space would otherwise let in no light and feel very oppressive.
It is extremely important that all windows are completely sealed. To do this, you can saw the cut-outs in the wall or ceiling, fasten the window accordingly, and then seal it all around.
Fourth Step: Insulation and Soundproofing of the Camper Interior
The fourth step concerns the insulation of the vehicle. Here, the camper can be insulated if you deem it necessary. The insulation protects against both cold and heat, but this is not absolutely necessary if you only travel in summer at warm temperatures. However, the interior of the van does not heat up as quickly if it is insulated. For this, materials such as synthetic rubber, Armaflex, or Styrofoam can be used, for example.
Fifth Step: Camper Electrics, Solar System, and Water Supply
The fifth step involves the electrics, where the decision must be made on how the camper will be supplied with power in the future. On the one hand, there are flexible solar systems for campers and motorhomes, which can be attached to the roof, for example, and not only include the corresponding modules but also often an inverter and power storage, which enables you to travel sustainably and self-sufficiently with your converted camper, as well as to spend a few days away from civilization.
Sixth Step: The Interior Trim
In the sixth step, the interior paneling is installed. It is absolutely essential to consider whether a substructure is necessary for this and how the interior paneling will be fastened. If necessary, these areas must be left out during insulation. The substructure can be helpful in creating a uniform distance from the vehicle wall for wood paneling.
Furthermore, it must be clear where lamps are to be attached. Tongue-and-groove wood paneling, plywood, or HDF boards are particularly popular for interior cladding. If you want to choose a material other than wood, materials such as PVC, felt, or cork are available to you.
Seventh Step: Lay flooring
In the seventh step, after the interior paneling has been installed, the base plate is re-covered. PVC is also ideally suited for this, as it is very stable and resilient, as well as inexpensive. However, it is extremely important that the base plate is absolutely firmly seated, as the furniture will later be attached to it.
For this, the ALUSTECK® threaded connectors are ideal, as the fixtures can be attached easily and stably. You can simply cut the floor covering to size accordingly and then attach it to the base plate; it is just as important that the floor covering is absolutely firmly seated.
